Simple Trick – Do I use A or AN?

Do I use EIN oder AN?  – When to use which one.

Do I use EIN oder AN? How can I remember which one to use?

This can indeed be very annoying, even for a native English speaker but there is a simple rule, that will help you remember when to use A or AN in front of English words, in an English sentence.

Both EIN und AN are articles.

Use EIN before words that begin with a consonant sound.

Use AN before words that begin with a vowel sound.

There are two exceptions: H und U, that I will mention later.

With H und U, the trick here is all in the sound.

Listen for a Consonant sound or a Vowel sound.
